ABOUT THE INDEX

Development Finance International (DFI) and Oxfam International have come together to each use their unique expertise to develop the Commitment to Reducing Inequality (CRI) Index and Report.

The CRI measures the extent to which governments are tackling inequality through their policy choices and actions. It tracks their commitments to

  • free public services (education, healthcare and social protection),
  • ensuring the rich pay their fair share of tax,
  • strong labour rights, and decent wages.

This is because inequality is not inevitable or accidental. It is the result of deliberate policy choices.

The CRI does not aim to measure inequality, instead it focuses on what each government is doing to fight inequality. This is because inequality is not inevitable or accidental. It is the result of deliberate policy choices. To better fight inequality, it is crucial to monitor what each government is doing and hold them to account – the CRI does just that, showing very clearly how governments are performing in relation to each other, and how each country is improving (or not) in fighting inequality.

Partnership Information

Our key partners play a crucial role in the development and success of the CRI Index, contributing their expertise and resources.

How to use the Index

The CRI Index aims to put data in the hands of others to fight inequality. This includes global activists and civil society organisations, including the Fight Inequality Alliance and Norwegian Church Aid, that actively use the index to hold governments to account.

The data is also used by international organisations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and Addis Tax Initiative to bolster their assessment of policy priorities for reducing inequality; regional organisations such as ECOWAS who are using the CRI to assess progress by their member states; and development partners such as the EU and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) who are using the Index to support countries to introduce anti-inequality policies.

If you can’t find what you are looking for in the methodology note, we are happy to answer any questions and explain how to use the data. Please email matthew.martin@dri.org.uk (DFI) or max.lawson@oxfam.org (Oxfam).
